Dentures Q & A
What are dentures?
Dentures are replacement teeth if you’ve lost some or all of your natural teeth. These prosthetic teeth attach to a pink, gum-colored base that looks identical to your gums. Modern dentures are a realistic, seamless addition to your smile that restore the look and function of your mouth.
Are there different types of dentures?
There are three main types of dentures provided at Wood Family Dentistry:
Full dentures
Full dentures replace all your teeth if you have none left. These dentures consist of prosthetic teeth that attach to an acrylic pink base, which covers the roof of your mouth and part of your gums in the lower arch.
Partial dentures
Partial dentures replace some of your teeth. While partial dentures do attach to a gum-colored base, the base does not cover the roof of your mouth. Instead, partial dentures often connect to a metal framework, which holds them in place.
Implant-supported dentures
Implant-supported dentures connect directly to dental implants — small titanium posts that screw into your gums and jawbone to replace your tooth roots. Instead of resting on top of your gums, dental implants hold your dentures securely in place, making it easier to chew and speak.
What are the benefits of dentures?
Healthy teeth keep your jawbone strong and durable. When you start losing teeth, your tooth-supporting bone begins to resorb back into your body.
This can lead to several complications, including facial sagging, which makes you look older than you are. Without a full set of teeth, your gum health and bite can degrade.
Dr. Wood creates dentures to fit your mouth comfortably, providing benefits such as:
- Replacing missing teeth
- Preventing facial sagging
- Improving your bite
- Restoring your ability to chew and speak
- Boosting your confidence
Modern dentures look, feel, and function like your natural teeth, so you never have to worry about your teeth looking bulky or unnatural.
How are dentures made?
Once Dr. Wood determines the best type of dentures for you, he creates an impression of your entire mouth. He uses these impressions to serve as an accurate model when he creates your personalized dentures.
Your dentures should fit comfortably and snuggly on your gums. If they feel loose, dentures can irritate your gums, make it difficult to chew properly, and impact your speech. It’s important to talk to Dr. Wood right away if your dentures feel uncomfortable.
